Col Curran

Col Curran was the product of a family with long soccer playing traditions. Like fellow local Ray Baartz, his first senior club was Adamstown in 1963. At season’s end he paid his own way to Manchester United for six months of the 1964/65 season.

Charlie Yankos

Born in 1961, Charlie Yankos made his debut aged 18 as a fullback with Fitzroy in Victoria. He progressed to become a strong defender in the Australian team. During his national career, Yankos played 89 matches for Australia, including 49 full internationals.

Harry Williams

Born in Sydney in 1951, Harry Williams was the first Aborigine to play soccer for Australia. As a teenager, Williams toured Europe successfully with the 1970 team. His notable career included 43 games for Australia (20 full internationals).

Manfred Schaefer

Manfred Schaefer migrated to Australia from Germany at the age of 12 and took up soccer at high school. He later joined Bankstown and then transferred to St George.

John Nyskohus

John Nyskokus enjoyed a long and successful playing career that included 36 games for Australia, 22 of them full internationals. He also represented South Australia on 26 occasions.

James McNabb

Jimmy McNabb started his football career as a fullback with Weston in Northern NSW until an injury to his right ankle turned him into an outstanding goalkeeper. Within two seasons he was selected for the Northern NSW representative team and played for Australia on 17 occasions.

William Maunder

William “Podge” Maunder was born in Newcastle in 1903. A noted goal scorer, Maunder was a member of Australia’s first international team that toured New Zealand in 1922. At the age of 18 he scored the first-ever goal for Australia in a soccer international.

Jimmy Mackay

Jimmy MacKay played 1st division in Scotland for Airdie. Arriving in Australia in 1965 on a working holiday, he joined Melbourne Croatia and helped the club win numerous honours. In 1972 he moved north to Sydney’s Hakoah and in 1975 returned south to South Melbourne Hellas.

Frank Loughran

Frank Loughran was born in Belfast in 1931 and quickly showed an aptitude for the game. Despite approaches from English professional clubs, Loughran migrated to Australia in 1954 where he joined Melbourne club Moreland. He was selected in the Victorian team the following year.

Bob Lawrie

A schoolteacher by trade, Bob Lawrie won football fame in the Ipswich schools competition. He later followed his brothers into the senior ranks with the famous Bundamba Rovers club.
