The versatile wide player said that the team was keen to take what they learned from the draw against Switzerland into the second match of the window.

“Everyone was a little bit disappointed with the draw,” she said.

“We took away the biggest thing, that they beat us with their physicality. So I think everyone’s pretty excited for tomorrow [against Germany], to go out there and give it everything we have.”

She said that both games in this window are vital to get used to a new cycle; involving new staff and a new tactical setup.

“It feels very fresh, with a new coach and new staff, new environment, and so on,” she said.

“It’s good to get around everyone again and work together. We are building – the game [against Switzerland] was the first of many. Our potential is sky-high. I think everyone’s pretty excited.”

Torpey played as a wing-back against Switzerland. It is something that she is used to from her time at Melbourne City and she said it allowed her to play to her strengths.

“It’s still something we have to get comfortable with, being under a new coach, learning his ways and everything else,” she said.

“Personally, I really like it. It’s a perfect position for me to get forward and I think the formation will suit us.”

The 24-year-old was a part of the side that took on Germany at the Olympic Games only a few months ago.

She came off the bench in that game, explaining that she took a lot from it.

“They’re a quality side physically, so I needed to be ready for that, and it was a shock to the system to get ready for,” she said.

“We’re a bit more used to it now and ready to go for the next one.”

Torpey said that she was expecting them to come out with that same physicality this time out, with the home crowd behind them, and that the CommBank Matildas would be focused on executing their game plan well to combat them.

“Germany are a quality side,” she said.

“We need to be really on our game. It’s a home game for them and a sold-out crowd, so they’re going to be quality, and they’re going to have a lot of energy behind them.

“We’ve got to get used to our formation, work together as a team and match them physically. That’s as simple as it gets.”
