Socceroos to play in gold shorts due to FIFA directive

Football Federation Australia (FFA) and its official apparel partner Nike have confirmed that the Socceroos will play in gold jerseys, gold shorts and white socks in the 2014 FIFA World Cup match against Chile in Cuiaba (Saturday, 8am AEST).

A FIFA directive has prevented the Socceroos playing in green shorts, which are part of the official Socceroos first choice strip for Brazil.

FIFA has ruled that green shorts would constitute a clash with the blue shorts worn by Chile.

The Socceroos will play in the preferred combination of gold jerseys, green shorts and white socks in the next two Group B matches against the Netherlands and Spain.

“Everyone would prefer to see the Socceroos in the classic green, gold and white against Chile because of the great heritage going back to the pioneers of the 1974 World Cup,” said an FFA spokesman.

“However, we accept that FIFA’s directive is an outcome based on a reasonable assessment that two teams in dark-colored shorts would constitute a clash. The fans can look forward to the classic strip in the next two matches.”
