Australian soccer will feature at the prestigious Australian Sport Awards to be held in Sydney tomorrow night (Thursday 11 March), by Brisbane based referee Tammy Ogston and new Australian Soccer Association Chief Executive Officer John O'Neill.
Australian soccer will feature at the prestigious Australian Sport Awards to be held in Sydney tomorrow night (Thursday 11 March). Brisbane based referee Tammy Ogston and new Australian Soccer Association Chief Executive Officer John O'Neill have been nominated in the categories of 'Official of the Year' and 'Sport Executive of the Year' respectively.
Tammy Ogston, as well as assistant referees' Airlie Keen and Jacqueline Leleu, represented Oceania at the 2003 FIFA Women's World Cup held in the United States during September/October. The trio were rewarded for their impressive displays at the tournament with appointment for the prestigious third place playoff match after earlier controlling two key group matches.
John' O'Neill, who was a previous winner of the award in 2002, has been nominated for his work during 2003 as Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Australian Rugby Union. The year included the staging of the "best ever" Rugby World Cup - the largest sporting event in the world during 2003.
Both nominees are one of only three in each category. Also nominated for 'Official of the Year' are David Tillett (Yachting) and Bill Harrigan (Rugby League). Nominated for 'Sport Executive of the Year' are Wayne Jackson (AFL) and David Gallop (Rugby League).
The 24th Australian Sport Awards are presented by Sports Industry Australia with SBS TV screening the awards on the evening of March 11.
