CommBank Matilda Amy Sayer said that scoring a brace in her first start in 549 days was an “indescribable” feeling.
The 23-year-old worked her way back from an ACL rupture to star for Australia against Argentina on Tuesday evening, scoring the team’s first two goals in the first half.
She was speaking to Football Australia Media post-match.
“It's indescribable to start again - especially coming back from such a long injury - and to score two goals,” she said.
“That's more than I've ever scored for the national team, and to do it in one game is incredible. It's just a great feeling all round. I really enjoyed playing."
“I felt really good out there. I felt really strong, really fit as well. I feel lucky to be given the chance to be on the field and start again.”
She described the way that she scored her brace.
“My first goal was really special,” she recounted.
“I was on the end of the cross from Kahli [Johnson]. We played together in the U23s, when I was her captain. She’s been talented from day one, so it was amazing to get the cross from her. I was in the right position at the right time.
“For my second goal, I was on the break. Caitlin [Foord] played me a perfect pass through. I was running full speed, and I had the time to slow down and really place the ball in the bottom left corner.
“You can see from my celebration, it was just so many emotions. I was so excited, jumping in the air. I don't know how good it looked, but all the emotions were there.”
She has spoken throughout the week about how she feels that she has returned to the park physically healthier than she has ever been.
She explained how it manifests on the field.

“I do feel like my ball skills are a lot better,” she said.
“I feel stronger as a player, physically and mentally. I'm just really enjoying myself more on the field. Football is football. Football is fun, and I love the game, and that's all it is.”
Joe Montemurro was announced as the new Head Coach for the CommBank Matildas on game day. Sayer hoped that her performance would impress Montemurro, who was watching in the stands.
“It was a great performance all around,” she said.
“I felt great. I really put my best foot forward, and I'm hoping that I'll be back with the Matildas soon and able to keep performing at this level.”
This window was another step towards preparation for the AFC Asian Cup 2026™ on home soil.
Sayer said that getting the games under the team’s belt goes a long way.
“We're gaining experience as a team. We're getting new players. We had a new debutant tonight as well,” she said.
“So building that depth in the squad, building those connections and performing in difficult conditions is a good thing. Any game, any experience that we can get in the lead up to the Asian Cup is a good thing.”
