Roar guns for Grand Final glory

Queensland Roar-s Westfield W-League team will shoot for double glory at Ballymore Stadium tomorrow when it faces Canberra United in the Grand Final.

Having finished clear on top of the table at the end of the regular season, and negotiated a tough semi-final clash with Sydney, the Roar are now aiming for ultimate glory in the inaugural Westfield W-League season.

In the final Roar will face the only side they failed to beat during the regular season and captain Kate McShea is expecting another tough, entertaining encounter.

“I think Canberra are a very strong side, they are very physical,” McShea said.

“They like to get into a little bit of a battle which is what we like as well so it should be nice and physical and plenty of entertainment for everyone watching.

“We-ve lost to them and drawn to them so we figure it is our turn to win.”

The Roar may have lost key midfielder Alicia Ferguson last week to an anterior cruciate ligament injury, but throughout the season have proven to have match-winners from within the squad.

However, looking backwards is not something the Roar side is allowing itself to do.

“We-re trying not to look back into the past, we-ve only had one loss this and if we go into it thinking about those things we could go into it a little complacent,” McShea said.

“For us it is basically concentrating on us and preparing as well as we can for this game.”

Unbeaten at Ballymore Stadium this season across four matches and McShea said the side was planning to make the most of their home ground advantage.

“The humidity up here, no one else can really prepare for it without being here,” she said.

“The Canberra girls are used to the dry hot heat down there.”

The Westfield W-League Grand Final kicks off at 2.55pm, Saturday at Ballymore.
