Qantas Under 13 Boys Football Team have mixed results at AFC U14 Festival of Football
Sabah, Malaysia Saturday 5 June 2010 By Adam Mark
Qantas Under 13 Boys Football Team suffered their first loss at the AFC U14 Festival of Football Tournament going down 2-0 to a spirited Singapore team.
Some defensive errors saw Australia concede two goals within the space of three minutes and from there on it was difficult for the Australians to overcome the deficit. Singapore was a much different side to the previous day playing a very aggressive style of football based around compactness, direct football and discipline. This style of play was difficult for the young Australian-s to cope with and finding answers within the limited space. But overall it was a very important game for the development of the players and the difficulties of playing in Asia.
In their second match of the day, the Qantas Under 13 Boys Football Team staged an incredible comeback to record a 2-all draw with Indonesia-s U14 team in arguably their best game of the tournament so far.
The match was played over two thirty minute halves with both sides obliged to play their full complement of 22-players as part of the new format which came into effect as part of the second stage of the tournament.
In the first half the Australian team changed the shape of their midfield three with Martin Lo becoming the point of the triangle in the 1-4-3-3.. However, it wasn-t until ten minutes into the second half when the game came to life when Indonesia took the lead after some quick combination play which unlocked the Australian defence. Shortly after, Indonesia extended their lead with another fine goal. Australia equalised with five minutes left to play following an Anthony Duzel corner which was cleared straight to Australian Captain Daniel De Silva. De Silva connected sweetly with his left foot to volley home and offer Australia a glimmer of hope. This hope turned into reality two minutes later when winger Daniel De Silva beat his defender out wide and cut ball back to midfielder Austin Ludwig who had timed his run with precision to arrive right in time and score at the near post with the final whistle blown just moments later.
Qantas Under 13 Boys Football Team play their final matches of the AFC U14 Festival of Football tomorrow against Myanmar and then the Philippines.
