Collette McCallum and her Sky Blue team mates have won the inaugural Women-s Professional Soccer Championship match, after upsetting runaway home and away champions Los Angeles Sol 1-0 at the Home Depot Centre.

Sky Blue finished the regular season in fourth and just scrapping into the finals, but worked their way through the finals with some terrific performances, including the final where they were minus two of their stars because of a clash with the European Championships.

Heather O-Reilly scored the all-important goal in the 17th minute, Natasha Kai flicking a cross to the back post and O-Reilly was on hand to get the ball into the back of the net.

McCallum had to settle for a place on the bench in the final after starting in the previous two games in the Championship series, but came on in the 72nd minute with Sol making a determined late charge despite being reduced to 10 players for the majority of the match.

Ten minutes after the goal Kai was away and was fouled from behind by Allison Falk, with the referee deciding she was the last player and denied Kai the goalscoring opportunity and Falk was shown the red card.

Sol, who were clearly the best side during the regular season spent a lot of time attacking the Sky Blue defence, who held on superbly for the upset win.

McCallum's Westfield Matilda team mate Sarah Walsh was also a member of the Sky Blue team, but was traded mid-season to the St Louis Athletica, whom Sky Blue beat to earn a place in the WPS Championship final.
