Matildas selection debate: midfield

With one of the most mobile and effective midfields in world football, Westfield Matildas boss Alen Stajcic has an abundance of options for August’s Games.

But with only 18-players in the squad allowed, who'll make Australia's midfield?

Classy Elise Kellond-Knight is a certainly with the German-based holding midfielder one of Australia’s best performers over the past 12 months.

The 25-year-old enjoyed a stellar World Cup campaign in Canada last year and was named in the team of the tournament.

Her ability to read the game and break up play make her an invaluable asset to the national team.

Another on her way to Brazil is Frankfurt's Emily van Egmond. One of Australia’s most important players, van Egmond provides much needed composure in the middle of the field and her passing range is up there with the best in the World.

She was one of Australia’s better performers in their unbeaten Olympic Qualifying campaign in Japan and scored an absolute cracker from distance to earn a point against China.

The diminutive Katrina Gorry or ‘mini’ as she is affectionately known completes Australia’s dynamic midfield trio and provides the creative element alongside Van Egmond and "KK".

Gorry, with her ability to get in between the lines and link up with the likes of Kyah Simon and Lisa De Vanna making her a dangerous weapon.

The Brisbane Roar midfielder has a knack of scoring stunning goals too, with her explosive right boot capable of picking out the top corner from distance.

While Australia’s starting midfield is all but set in stone, there is plenty of competition for spots on the bench.

Swedish-based Tameka Butt is one player who is in knocking on the door after an ultra-consistent 12 months in the Green and Gold.

Butt has served as able back-up when required by Alen Stajcic with her energy providing a real spark for the side at last year’s World Cup.

Another who has impressed in recent times is Newcastle Jets attacking midfielder Chloe Logarzo.

The 21-year-old showed her undoubted potential with solid displays in the recent friendly series against New Zealand.

Other options for Stajcic in the middle third are experienced duo Aivi Luik and Caitlin Munoz, though neither were involved against the Kiwis.
