The North Carolina Courage scored the earliest goal of the season, and then one of the latest, as they defeated Angel City FC 2-1. Cortnee Vine struck in the opening minute to score her first goal of the season and her second in the NWSL. Riley Tiernan equalised to hit back for Angel City before Brianna Pinto scored in stoppage time to snatch the three points for the Courage.
Both Angel City and North Carolina now sit on 15 points, two away from the playoff spots. Vine started the match as did Alanna Kennedy for Angel City.
Portland Thorns finished the round with a 2-0 victory over the Washington Spirit. Reilyn Turner and Pietra Tordin scored either side of half-time to complete the upset. The Thorns now find themselves in fifth, with a four-point buffer in the top eight. Kaitlyn Torpey started for the Thorns while Mackenzie Arnold remained unavailable with injury.
Canada
AFC Toronto defeated Calgary Wild 2-1. A brace from Nikayla Small helped Toronto to the victory. Former A-League Women’s player Danielle Steer pulled one back for Calgary, but it was not enough. Kahli Johnson was an unused substitute in the victory.
Sweden
BK Häcken showed their dominance on the weekend, defeating AIK Fotboll 6-0. There were four different goal scorers as the league leaders ran riot over a team who had previously shown a large amount of defensive resistance this season. Jada Whyman played the full game in goals for AIK.
Kristianstads DFF had a disappointing 2-2 draw with Brommapojkarna. Kristianstads took the lead late in the second half, thanks to a pair of Amy Sayer assists, after conceding early, but an 89th-minute goal to Alive Linnea Ahlberg meant that the points had to be shared. Sayer and Remy Siemsen both started for Kristianstads.
Denmark
FC Nordsjælland ended their season was a crucial scoreless draw against Fortuna Hjørring that saw them finish second and secure a place in the UEFA Women’s Champions League next season. Nordsjælland were the defending champions in both the league and the cup, but a drop off in form in April and May meant that they were one point away from missing out on European qualification altogether.
Winonah Heatley has been ever present through the ups and the downs of the last two years and yet again played a crucial role in the clean sheet on the weekend, starting and playing the full match.
