Matildas Abroad Review: Kennedy scores late equaliser; Nevin debuts for Malmö

Alanna Kennedy scored a late equaliser for Angel City as her side rescued a point over the weekend. Elsewhere, Courtney Nevin’s debut for Malmö FF was a successful one, with her side walking away 1-0 victors.

United States

The North Carolina Courage were defeated 2-1 by the Houston Dash after taking the lead in the first half. The scores were locked at a goal apiece for much of the game before Sophie Schmidt scored in stoppage time for the Dash to secure all three points. Cortnee Vine was a last-gasp substitute for the Courage as they chased the game.

Angel City FC secured a point against the San Diego Wave in a 1-1 draw. Makenzy Robbe’s goal for the Wave seemed like it was going to be the winner before Alanna Kennedy popped up in stoppage time with a header to earn a point for her side. Kennedy started and played the full match for Angel City.

Portland Thorns got back to winning ways in the 'Cascadia derby' after defeating the Seattle Reign 4-2. Emeri Adames opened the scoring for Seattle inside three minutes, before Sam Coffey scored the equaliser from the spot. Reilyn Turner sent the Thorns into the break with a 2-1 lead, finding the back of the net before the half-hour mark. Reyna Reyes and Pietra Tordin added their name to the scoresheet in the second half to ensure Thorns walked away with all three points. Mackenzie Arnold started and played the full match for Thorns, while Kaitlyn Torpey came off the bench for the home side.

Sweden

Malmö FF secured a vital 1-0 victory over FC Rosengård. Anna Plantin’s 86th-minute goal was all that separated the two sides as Malmö rose five points clear of fourth, and remained only one point away from the top of the table. Courtney Nevin made her debut for Malmö in this game at left-back, starting and playing the full 90 minutes.

Jada Whyman kept yet another clean sheet for AIK Fotball as they defeated Kristianstads DFF 2-0. Ida Björnberg and Moa Sjöström were the goal scorers at either end of the game as AIK continue to establish themselves as an upper-mid-table team and put a huge dent in Kristianstads European aspirations. Amy Sayer started for Kristianstads while Remy Siemsen was a second-half substitute.

Daniela Galic made her debut for Vittsjö GIK in their 2-1 win over Piteå. Hanna Ekengren opened the scoring for Vittsjö just before the half-hour mark to give them the lead heading into the break. Piteå clawed the equaliser back in the 74th minute, Cecilia Edlund, thinking they had done enough to secure a point; however, Vittsjö's Anna Haddock scored in the 84th minute to seal the win. Galic came off the bench in the 74th minute to make her debut. 

England

West Ham kicked off pre-season with a 1-0 victory over Sparta Praha. Riko Ueki scored the only goal of the game in the first half. Katrina Gorry played the first half as captain.

Mexico

C.F. Monterrey continued their winning ways to start the season, defeating Mazatlán 5-0. Emily Gielnik picked up an assist for the third goal as Monterrey ran riot. Gielnik started the match as she continued her fantastic start for the Liga MX side.

Canada

Calgary Wild FC picked up a crucial three points against Ottawa Rapid FC. A late goal from former A-League Women player Jaclyn Sawicki was the difference between the two sides and saw them secure their fifth win of the season. Kahli Johnson was unavailable for Calgary. 

France

Teagan Micah made her first appearance for the OL Lyonnes in their pre-season game against Servette, coming off the bench to help the French side win 5-0.

Italy

Wini Heatley, Alex Chidiac and Jess Nash made their first appearances for their new sides in Italy, with all three teams in action during pre-season friendlies ahead of the Serie A Femminile kicking off in October.
