Mariners hot in front of goal
A hat-trick to Michelle Heyman has seen Central Coast record an emphatic 6-0 victory over Adelaide United in the Westfield W-League match at Hindmarsh Stadium on Saturday.
The game was staged in sweltering conditions with the players taking regular drinks breaks while referee Lee Corey had to sit out the second half with heat exhaustion. But South Australia's early blast of summer didn't stop the Mariners delivering a 90-minute demolition job against the home side.
Central Coast scored three goals in each half and was running until the final whistle. Adelaide toiled hard in the first half but its younger players struggled to maintain intensity as the match progressed.
To United's credit it did find a second wind as the game neared full-time with a couple of corners and shots on target giving it something to work with next week.
In Sydney, a brilliant strike by Leena Khamis was enough to give a dominant Sky Blues side the three points against a 10-woman Newcastle Jets at Seymour Shaw Park.
The lively forward's 24th-minute goal was ample reward for an impressive Sydney FC, which had a glut of goal-scoring opportunities in a game it controlled from the first whistle.
Canberra United moved to fifth place on the Westfield W-League ladder after a record 4-0 victory over Perth Glory at McKellar Park.
The win - Canberra's biggest in its short history - sees it maintain touch with the top four with three rounds remaining.
And a late goal from Kara Mowbray saw Melbourne Victory hold defending W-League champions Brisbane Roar to a tense 1-1 draw at Ballymore Stadium on Saturday night.
Meanwhile in National Youth League action, a sensational strike from Hyundai A-League veteran Nik Mrdja helped boost the Central Coast Marines to top spot on the ladder with an impressive 3-1 win over Brisbane Roar in a bruising encounter at Ballymore Stadium.
And a star-studded Adelaide United and a depleted Australian Institute of Sport played out an amazing 4-4 draw at Hindmarsh Stadium.
It was 1-1 at half-time before the teams took part in some extraordinary counter-punch football which saw four goals scored in 10 minutes and six for the second half.
