The 2004 Bill Turner Cup (Boys) and Trophy (Girls) Finals Series will be played next week in the City of Lake Macquarie, NSW at Jack McLaughlan Oval, Edgeworth.
The High Schools 15-and-under knockout soccer tournament has reached the pinnacle of the year with just four teams remaining in each of the boys and girls competitions. Over 900 schools, 500+ boys and 400+ girls commenced the competition in April this year.
The Bill Turner Cup for boys is in its 26th year while the Bill Turner Trophy for girls is in its 14th year, although only under the Bill Turner banner for the 4th year.
Mr Turner is the patron of both competitions that bear his name and was the founder of the boys' competition back in 1979 when a group of dedicated teachers known as 'Northern NSW Schools Soccer' introduced the 15-years-and-under competition in the Hunter region.
The Bill Turner Cup commenced with a modest 34 entries from State and Independent schools from the region in 1979 and has grown to the point where it is one of the largest schools competitions on the East Coast of the nation. Schools from Queensland, NSW, NNSW, ACT and Northern Victoria contest the Bill Turner Cup and Trophy.
Mr Turner was President of the Northern NSW Schools Soccer Association for 25 years but last year decided to step down as President but proudly accepted the role of Patron.
"At the 2003 annual general meeting our esteemed President Bill Turner chose to step down after a quarter of a century's excellent service,'' incoming President Lindsay Hewison explained.
""We are honoured that Bill has agreed to remain associated with us as patron ... thank you Bill for all you have accomplished.''
On Tuesday September 14 all eight teams will be welcomed to the City of Lake Macquarie, at a Civic Reception, prior to the semi finals that will be played later that day at Jack McLaughlan Oval.
The winners of the semi finals, both boys and girls, will play-off the following evening at the same venue for the Bill Turner Cup (Boys) and Bill Turner Trophy (Girls).
