Capital Football invites Junior Football teams to ‘see yourself- at the Kanga

Just when the World Cup finishes in Germany, the Australian junior football world focuses on Canberra…

Registrations close Friday May 19

“Affectionately known as the ‘Kanga-, the McDonald-s Kanga Cup since it-s inception in 1991 has been regarded as a benchmark in international youth football tournaments. Annually taking place in July in Canberra, Australia-s national capital, the McDonald-s Kanga Cup has consistently drawn 200+ teams since 2002. The 2006 McDonald-s Kanga Cup will take place from July 9-16 in 2006 and July 8-15 in 2007

Teams take part in competitions for girls and boys for under 11 to 18 age groups. There are two types of competition: 1. Cup - for Division 1 standard and representative teams (that play ‘up-) 2. Plate - for Division 2-3 standard teams

Teams are guaranteed five competition games (friendlies can also be organised). Depending on the size of entries, first phase games can begin on Sunday afternoon (usually Monday) and are to be completed by Thursday. Quarters and Semis take place on the Friday. Finals take place from Friday night through to Sunday.

The ACT Football Federation (trading as Capital Football) is the proud host of the McDonald-s Kanga Cup. Football Federation Australia (FFA) sanctions the Kanga Cup. Only teams/clubs affiliated to FFA members (or through FIFA member national associations) are able to take part in the tournament. Capital Football is a non-profit organisation. Any profits are reinvested into the event or football in the ACT Region. Various incentives exist to lessen the team fee (which covers 19 people).

With the first ever entrant from Tasmania confirming attendance, all Australian states will be represented at the McDonald-s Kanga Cup in 2006. International interest has been confirmed with two teams from New Zealand so far taking part.

Through it-s motto of ‘uniting the youth of the world through football-, the McDonald-s Kanga Cup is more than a football tournament but a cultural experience. The Kanga starts with a traditional Opening Ceremony that this year will take place at Canberra Stadium. There is a march past, player oaths, entertainment and some fun with Ronald McDonald. The ever-popular Kanga Disco takes place on Tuesday and on Wednesday, the inaugural Movie Night, where it is planned to screen the preview for GOAL! 2. On Thursday, the Gala Awards Evening takes place, where AIS/ACT sports identities mix with teams and the Fair Play / Player of the Tournament awards is presented. The Kanga Cup Finals then take centre stage for the weekend.

All through the week there is the Kanga Expo, where official merchandise, replica tops, boots, action photos etc are on offer for the discerning buyer.

With Canberra as Australia-s national capital, for those ½ days where there are no games, there are many opportunities for (mostly free) excursions to attractions such as Questacon, Parliament House, the National Capital Exhibition, the National Museum of Australia, Sportex at the AIS and the National Zoo & Aquarium.

What makes us different? • Cup & Plate Competitions • Up for grabs - Champions Cup PLUS Fair Play Award and Player of the Tournament, • It takes place during the football season, so is a gauge on how a team is progressing in their season, • Canberra-s relaxed and smooth infrastructure allows for easy travelling and many interesting attractions

The Kanga Cup Organising Committee is dedicated to providing: 1. A quality football experience in fields of play, competition and officials, 2. An enriching social / cultural development environment in which participants can learn about themselves, their team and others,

Yes Canberra is a chilly place in winter, but after the fog has cleared, Canberra experiences more clear and fresh sunshine than any other Australian capital city. Really!

We invite junior football teams to ‘see yourself- playing football in the nation-s capital.”
