Greatest Hyundai A-League goals: top 13

After Bruno Fornaroli's sublime goal in the Melbourne derby, where does it rate in the league's greatest ever? What do you think?

13. Liam Miller: Brisbane Roar (Season 2013/14)

You will go a long way to find a better team goal than the one Roar pulled off against Victory at AAMI Park. It took just over a minute from start to finish and included 21 consecutive passes, starting deep in Roar territory.

They moved the ball from one side of the pitch to the other, involving almost every outfield player with wonderful passing and movement and a decisive finish from the Irishman. The ultimate team goal!

12: Alex Terra: Melbourne Heart (Season 2010/11)

An extraordinary piece of skill from the Brazilian striker against Glory in Perth.

A cross was headed into the path of Terra, he flicked it up with his right boot and facing his own goal, placed a sublime bicycle kick effort into the corner of the Glory net.

11: Brendon Santalab: Sydney FC (Season 2007/08)

A ripping curling effort from ‘Santa’ in a pulsating clash against the Reds at Adelaide Oval.

Brendon Santalab.

With his side trailing 1-0, Santalab picked up the ball to the left of the box, cut inside and curled a peach of a shot into the far, top corner.

10: Carlos Hernandez: Melbourne Victory (Season 2009/10)

The Costa Rican built up an impressive catalogue of goals during his time in the A-League but not many as good as this one against the Mariners. Marco Rojas cut the ball back to Hernandez on the edge of the box and he went ‘whack’ with a first-time strike which cannoned into the far post and into the net.

How Hernandez managed to get some much accuracy and power into a shot across his body shows just how good he was. Brenton Speed’s commentary on Fox Sports perfectly summed it up when he said: "Welcome back King Carlos!"

9: Gui Finkler: Melbourne Victory (Season 2013/14)

Another free-flowing team goal which unlocked Wellington’s defence back in Season 9. It involved some wonderful interplay and combinations from Victory, with more than 20 passes before the final ball fell to Finkler.

And the Brazilian made no mistake, dinking a classy little chip over the keeper and into the net.

8: Danny Tiatto: Brisbane Roar (Season 2009/10)

The combative Tiatto showed his classy side as well with a cracking goal against Melbourne Victory at Etihad Stadium.

Danny Tiatto.

Accepting a pass from Matty McKay, Melbourne-born Tiatto drilled a 30-yard rocket into the corner of the net. A superb strike of power and precision.

7: Alessandro Del Piero: Sydney FC (Season 2012/13)

An extraordinary strike by the Italian maestro against Glory in Perth. There appeared little danger when he picked up possession in the middle of the park about 35 yards from Glory’s goal.

But no-one closed Del Piero down and he took a couple of steps forward before smashing a shot – with his weaker left-foot – into the top corner giving keeper Danny Vukovic no chance. Bravo Ale!

6: Marc Janko: Sydney FC (Season 2014/15)

The big Austrian scored 16 goals in his only season in the Hyundai A-League but none better than his howitzer against Brisbane.

Sydney FC striker Marc Janko returns from injury for the clash with Melbourne Victory.

Roar keeper Jamie Young’s hacked clearance up-field only found Janko, who controlled the ball on his chest before whacking a first-time left-footed volley into the empty net from a good 40 metres out. Pure class!

5: Shinji Ono; Western Sydney Wanderers (Season 2012/13)

With a spot in the A-League decider on the line, Ono produced a moment of magic when it mattered most. Getting the ball just outside the box, the ex-Japanese international spotted Roar gloveman Michael Theo off his line and sent a delightful chip over his head into the far corner.

Did Ono score the goal of the season?

Wanderland went wild and Speedy was at it again when he said: "Shinji Ono. Genius, you most certainly are!"

4: Nick Carle: Newcastle Jets (2006-2007)

Carle enjoyed an exceptional individual campaign in season two with a spectacular solo goal against Adelaide.

Nick Carle.

Winning possession deep in his own half, he set off on a gut-busting 70-metre run at a retreating defence (with the help of Joel Griffiths who shouldered away a Reds defender), getting to the edge of the Reds box before hitting a clever strike with the outside of his left boot into the far corner. Cue mayhem!

3: Marcos Flores: Adelaide United (Season 2010/11)

Like Carle’s individual brilliance, this effort by Flores against the Jets showed off all the Argentines exceptional qualities. First he demonstrated strength and balance to hold off challenges from a couple of defenders about 35 metres from goal before using his brilliant close control to weave past two more players.

Marcos Flores.

If that wasn’t enough Flores then had the composure and technique to beat the keeper with a pin-point strike into the far top-corner.

2: Orlando Engelaar: Melbourne Heart (Season 2013/14)

Injuries meant Heart fans never saw enough of giant Dutchman but this goal against the Mariners is something they will never forget. From inside his own half, the 14-time Dutch international spotted keeper Liam Reddy off his line and unleashed an arrow-like effort over his head and under the crossbar from 55-metres.

Engelaar's the best ever A-League goal? You tell us

An incredible long-range effort which made headlines around the world and attracted hundreds of thousands of views.

And the winner is....

1: Bruno Fornaroli: Melbourne City (Season 2015/16)

VIDEO: Fornaroli's super Derby strike

A truly amazing passage of play by the Uruguayan which lit up the Melbourne Derby on Saturday night as he started and finished a memorable goal.

Bruno Fornaroli nets the opener in Saturday night's Melbourne Derby.

First Fornaroli shrugged off the challenge of a couple of Victory defenders inside his own half before pulling off an audacious rabona to release team-mate Anthony Caceres. He continued his run forward and got on the end of Aaron Mooy’s clever pass before delicately dinking a shot over Vukovic. Pure genius in a big game, too.
