The Fury were down a man just before the break when Ufuk Tallay was given a second yellow card for an act of simulation, attempting to get Perth captain Jacob Burns sent off for a foul.

The Glory immediately took advantage of the extra man, going ahead through Mile Sterjovski's spot kick in the 48th minute.

But instead of attacking the contest, the Glory opted to sit on their lead and were made to pay 20 minutes from time.

Velaphi appeared to have taken the ball comfortably from a close-range header by John Tambouras, but the goalkeeper was challenged over the line by Chris Grossman and referee Ben Williams determined the goal counted.

The hosts launched a flurry of attacks at the death but a packed North Queensland defence held firm for the draw as second-placed Perth missed the opportunity to climb on top of the Hyundai A-League table, with the Fury remaining in last position.

Melbourne Victory defender Adrian Leijer scored his first goal since re-joining the club from English Premier League side Fulham to hand the reigning Hyundai A-League champions their first home win of the season on Saturday night against an unlucky Brisbane Roar.

Leijer's finish from close range in the 72nd minute gave Melbourne a 2-1 win and came at a time when the home side was heading for its fourth straight draw at Etihad Stadium, having also lost its opening match of the season at home against Central Coast.

Meanwhile in W-League action, a brace from Courtney Beutel and a dominant performance from Tameka Butt have helped Brisbane Roar kick off their title defence with a commanding 3-0 victory over Canberra United at Ballymore Stadium on Saturday.

Melbourne Victory's women's team opened its season in style with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Perth Glory at Etihad Stadium.

Goals from midfielder Enza Barilla and striker Katie Thorlakson in each half sealed the win in a match the Victory dominated from start to finish.

In National Youth League news, Central Coast Mariners recorded their first win of the campaign to shock leader and reigning champion Sydney FC with a 3-1 National Youth League victory at Seymour Shaw Park in Sydney.

And an injury-time penalty from striker Million Buttshire saw the Perth Glory National Youth League side claim a thrilling come-from-behind 3-2 win over the Australian Institute of Sport at ME Bank Stadium.
