Football Federation Australia (FFA) has congratulated Melbourne football fans for creating a superb atmosphere at last night's Hyundai A-League Semi Final at Etihad Stadium.
"There were many big sporting events in Melbourne and across Australia last night, but the Semi Final won hands down for creating a fantastic atmosphere," said the Head of Hyundai A-League, Damien de Bohun.
"I thank the vast majority who supported the event and made it an unforgettable night, but like all stakeholders I condemn the fringe element who engaged in anti-social behaviour.
"FFA will work with police, the two competing clubs and Etihad Stadium to identify those responsible for igniting flares and behaving in an unruly manner.
"We don't want these individuals at football matches anywhere in Australia. Under FFA's zero tolerance policy, we'll impose five-year bans for those caught igniting flares and even longer bans for those who engage in acts of thuggery."
Melbourne Victory Football Club Chief Executive Ian Robson shared the sentiments of Damien de Bohun.
"The support of our members and fans was incredible last night and has been right throughout the season and we applaud them for that. To be able to share a Semi-Final win with all members and fans is extremely satisfying for everyone involved at the club and obviously this sets up a home Grand Final next Sunday,” said Robson.
"Sadly, there were isolated and unfortunate incidents at Etihad Stadium last night that Melbourne Victory Football Club don't condone and do not want to see a repeat of at future Hyundai A-League matches, particularly at next Sunday's Grand Final at AAMI Park.
"Our club strongly advocates that anti-social and unruly behaviour is not welcome at Melbourne Victory matches.
"We will work with FFA and all stakeholders to identify offenders and will continue to do all we can to present a safe and enjoyable environment for our members and fans at Melbourne Victory matches in the future."
Etihad Stadium CEO Paul Sergeant said: "We echo the FFA's comments that last night's event was a fabulous occasion and vindicated the FFA and A-League's decision to host the semi final at our venue."We also deplore the poor behaviour of a small minority and support the actions of the FFA, Melbourne Victory and Victoria Police to identify offenders and have them dealt with, in order not to disrupt the enjoyment of such fantastic events.
"We will also conduct our own internal reviews into the management of the semi final over the next few days."
