Federici takes the gloves

Adam Federici will make his Australian debut as the replacement goalkeeper for injured first choice stopper Mark Schwarzer in Monday night's World Cup farewell clash against New Zealand at the MCG.

Schwarzer, the Qantas socceroos' most experienced player with 73 caps, will miss the friendly clash due to a sprained thumb but is expected to return to the Australian line-up for the first of two pre-World Cup friendlies in South Africa against Denmark on June 1.

Federici, 25, played for Australia at the 2008 Beijing Olympics where he was one of the best keepers of the tournament but due to Schwarzer's total dominance of the number one position for Australia has yet to make his debut at senior level.

However Federici has established himself as Australia's number two stopper this season after taking over as the top 'keeper at English Championship club Reading where he enjoyed such a fine season he's even been linked with a possible move to the English Premier League.

Australia will be without several stars on Monday night with Harry Kewell (groin), Brett Emerton (hamstring) and giant striker Josh Kennedy (back soreness) also all missing from the line-up.

In the absence of both Kewell and Kennedy, the diminutive Scott McDonald gets another chance to break his scoring duck for the Qantas socceroos.

McDonald, now at English Championship club Middlesbrough, was a prolific scorer for both Celtic and Motherwell in the Scottish Premier League but has yet to score for the Qantas socceroos in 15 previous international appearances.

The other surprises in the Australian line-up were the inclusions of David Carney and Mark Milligan in defence - alongside the experienced central pairing of Lucas Neill and Craig Moore - ahead of usual first choice left and right backs respectively in Scott Chipperfield and Luke Wilkshire as manager Pim Verbeek continues to experiment ahead of the World Cup.

And in the five man midfield the surprise selection was 23-year-old German based midfielder Dario Vidosic who will play alongside regular Qantas socceroos' stars Tim Cahill, Vince Grella, Mark Bresciano and Jason Culina.

Teenage excitement machine Tommy Oar - who made such a big impact in his Qantas socceroos' debut in an Asian Cup qualifier against Indonesia in March - was named as one of six possible substitutes.

The Kiwis named a full strength side making just one change from the team which beat Bahrain 1-0 in Wellington in November to send the country to the World Cup finals for only the second time in their history and for the first time since 1982.

Veteran midfielder Simon Elliott, who at 35 is currently without a club but has spent most of his career playing in the United States, returns to midfield in place of Michael McClinchey.

But the Kiwis - who famously beat Australia in the 1999 and 2002 Oceania Nations Cup Final prior to the Qantas socceroos' move into Asia, will still be a dangerous foe with their three pronged strikeforce of experienced strikers Shane Smeltz, Chris Killen and Rory Fallon - who scored the winning goal against Bahrain to take the Kiwis to the World Cup.

Smeltz, who plays alongside Socceroo Jason Culina at Gold Coast United, was one of six A-League players named in the Kiwis starting line-up alongside five members from the New Zealand based A-League club Wellington Phoenix.
