Fringe Qantas Socceroo goalkeeper Adam Federici has secured Reading a 1-1 draw against Cardiff City, but not doing what he does best between the sticks.

With his side down 1-0 towards the end of the game, Federici went up to contest a corner in the 89th minute, and when Michael Duberry-s header was cleared off the line, Federici was on hand to lash home the rebound.

Qantas Socceroo midfielder Tim Cahill also got himself on the scorers list, with his early second half goal proving the difference in a 1-0 away win at Middlesbrough.

Cahill needed several attempts to get the ball across the line, but his persistence paid off on the third attempt to stab his shot home from 2 metres out.

Mark Viduka made his first start for Newcastle United after his return from an Achilles tendon injury, but it was Wigan Athletic that got the points with a 2-1 win.

Mark Schwarzer kept yet another clean sheet for Fulham Athletic as they drew 0-0 away at Tottenham Hotspur with the Australian custodian making several brilliant saves during the match.

Lucas Neill was replaced at half time in West Ham-s 4-1 win over Portsmouth; Richard Garcia was not in the Hull City squad, but that was probably a blessing as his team crumbled to a 5-1 loss at Manchester City; while Brett Emerton was in the Blackburn Rovers side that drew 0-0 away at Sunderland.

Meanwhile Nick Carle laid on the Crystal Palace-s final goal for Danny Butterfield in a 3-1 win at home against Norwich City, the win lifting them into the top six. David Carney, Mile Sterjovski and Ruben Zadkovich were not included in their respective sides squads for the Boxing Day games.
