After a stunning debut season in the English Championship, Caltex Socceroos star Aaron Mooy is set for his toughest test yet as Huddersfield Town fight to earn promotion to the Premier League.
Championship Playoffs get underway
On Sunday night (AEST), the Terriers play host to Sheffield Wednesday (4th) in the first leg of the Championship playoffs, with the second leg set to take place on Thursday morning at Hillsborough Stadium.
Mooy has played an integral role in Huddersfield’s rise this season, making 48 appearances across all competitions to help David Wagner’s side to a fifth-place finish in the Championship.
Mooy wins ultimate accolade at Huddersfield
The 26-year-old’s stellar campaign earned him Huddersfield’s player of the year award and he was also named in the EFL’s Team of the Season and the Championship’s PFA Team of the Year.
But the midfielder will need to be at his best if the Terriers are to progress to the Championship Playoff Final, with Wednesday having beaten Huddersfield on both occasions during the regular season (2-0 and 1-0).
Should Huddersfield defeat Wednesday over two legs, Mooy’s side will face the winner of the other playoff between Reading (3rd) and Fulham (6th) in the Final on May 30.
The winner of the one-off Final at Wembley earns promotion to the English Premier League.
Eredivisie title on the line
Meanwhile, Aussie keeper Brad Jones has the chance to seal the Eredivisie title with Feyenoord in this weekend’s final round in Holland.
Sitting one point clear of Ajax at the top with one game remaining, Jones’ side can claim their first league title since 1999 with a win at home to ninth-placed Heracles Almelo.
A 3-0 loss away to Excelsior last weekend kept the title race alive until the final weekend and Feyenoord can’t afford another slip up with Ajax away to 12th-placed Willem II.
