Caltex Socceroos trio seal Championship safety

Three Caltex Socceroos mainstays are celebrating Championship survival after helping their sides to important results in England’s second tier overnight.

Jackson Irvine, Massimo Luongo and Bailey Wright all passed the examination of high-tension affairs as their teams officially avoided the drop.

Irvine’s Burton achieved their season objective with a 1-1 draw away to an Australian-led Barnsley.

The energetic midfielder went close with a header before being withdrawn at the break, while Sydney product Callum Elder and Perth-born Wales youth international Gethin Jones started at left and right fullback respectively for the hosts.

Ryan Williams watched from the bench as the Reds settled for a point.

At Loftus Road, Luongo supplied the assist for QPR’s opener in their much-needed 2-0 win over Nottingham Forest.

The R’s scored both goals after half-time to dispel the uncertainty caused by a six-game losing run.

Meanwhile, Wright was central to Bristol City’s 1-0 upset of would-be champions Brighton while Aaron Mooy came off the bench as a heavily-rotated Huddersfield lost 2-0 at Birmingham.
