Australian referee wins AFC award

Australian whistleblower Christopher Colley has been named as the AFC’s Futsal referee of the year for 2014.

The 36-year-old, who works as a police officer, was presented with the award at the closing ceremony of an AFC Futsal Referee Course in Kuala Lumpur last week.

“I’d like to thank the AFC for all the support and guidance gained from the instructors through AFC Futsal Refereeing Programs whether during tournaments or courses,” Colley said.

“I’d also like to thank the AFC for being committed to the development of futsal refereeing and proof of this commitment is the inclusion of Women Futsal Referees on the AFC panel.

“I’d also like to thank my family for always supporting me and allowing me to carry on with this passion.”

AFC Deputy General Secretary Dato’ Windsor John congratulated Colley as said the AFC’s investment in the education and training of match officials is paying off.

“As the teams prepare well, the referees must also be equally prepared. They must have good fitness and also sound technical knowledge,” he said.

“Modern futsal is growing and the referees must be aware of the latest trends and developments taking place in the world of futsal.

“It's the first time the AFC is organising a course for Women Futsal Referees. Seven women have created history by becoming the first AFC Women Futsal Referees.

“As they make history, they will also set the standards, thus they have to make sure that they are able to carry out this important task well.”
