Aussies Abroad: Ryan stars in Brighton's win over West Ham

Mathew Ryan starred between the sticks as Brighton and Hove Albion notched a crucial Premier League victory over West Ham United in the early hours of Saturday morning.

The Caltex Socceroos goalkeeper made four saves in total to help Brighton claim a 1-0 win over the travelling Hammers at the Amex Stadium for the club’s second victory of the campaign.

A first half strike from Glenn Murray proved the difference for Chris Hughton’s side in what was an even and hard-fought battle in East Sussex.

Ryan had to be alert from the early minutes to deny in-form West Ham striker Marko Arnautovic before marshalling a resolute Seagulls defence expertly in the second stanza.

The 26-year-old was faced with an aerial bombardment late on as the Hammers pressed for an equaliser, but Ryan and his Brighton rear-guard held on confidently to seal Brighton’s first clean sheet of the season.

It was also a good morning for Ryan’s Caltex Socceroos goalkeeping compatriot Brad Jones, who played a full game in Al-Nassr’s 5-1 win over Al-Hazem.

That result extends a perfect start for Jones’ side, who sit top of the Saudi Pro League with five wins from five matches.
