Aussies Abroad: Porta's golden season

Richard Porta and Nacional finished off the Uruguayan season in style, with a Golden Boot and a title.

Richard Porta says he wants a Qantas Socceroos jersey and given his form while plying his trade in Uruguay for Nacional he might just deserve one.

The globetrotting striker has been banging them in from everywhere for the Uruguayan champions in the 2011/12 season and finished the season with 14 goals from 11 games to claim the Golden Boot in the national league, while Nacional claimed their 44th championship.

The goalscoring spree backing up the noise Porta has been making about deserving a shot at playing in the national side since way back when Pim Verbeek was in charge, and surely after his performance in Uruguay he might prove hard for Holger Osieck to ignore, with goals in the final stage of FIFA World Cup qualifying hard to come by thus far.

And while Porta has been banging them in from everywhere in a season just finished, two of Australia-s most prominent strikers can-t seem to buy a goal.

Both Josh Kennedy and Alex Brosque have failed to find the net in several weeks at club level in Japan and while Kennedy has been playing and providing plenty of assists, Brosque has been the victim of a couple of suspensions after receiving red cards.

Moving across to Korea and the slew of Aussies there and it looks like Sasa Ognenovski is looking for his exit to the Middle East with Seongham continuing to struggle, but he is not struggling as much as David Carney, who despite a promising start to his time at Bunyodkor has found himself riding the pine in recent times, spending all his time with the team in June on the bench, his quest for regular first time football continuing.
