AFW Preview - Building Blocks

As the Hyundai A-League prepares to start its growth process, it’s shaping to be a case of: If you build it, they will come

Exactly when the Hyundai A-League became hot property is unclear. But it became official in June this year, when Football Federation Australia announced 10 consortiums were bidding for just two places in the Hyundai A-League for season 2009/10.

It was the football equivalent of Boxing Day sales - the doors opened and a mad scramble began, not for drastically reduced whitegoods, but for a place in the most buoyant and energised sports market in Australia. Scratching, punching and eye-gauging, albeit the corporate kind, were not permitted - bids, and their backers, had to demonstrate the highest standard of professionalism and corporate competence.
