Football West and FFA coaching staff recently held “Smarter Than Smoking” skills clinics as an introduction to the game at two remote indigenous communities in the Kimberley. Over 200 kindergarten, primary and secondary students from Looma Community School and Nookenbah Community School participated in skill sessions over a 2 day period.

Balls, cones and coach education resources were given to the community to aid teachers in continuing to improve the skills of the students.

Great talent was shown by the boys and girls, most who have never had a “first touch” of a soccer ball.

The sessions were met with great enthusiasm by both students and teachers and will be followed up in 2009 with a return visit by Football West and FFA staff.

Clinics will also be held in other indigenous communities at this time with the culmination of a “Festival of Football” carnival day involving all schools. The newly formed Broome Soccer Association will help initiate the small sided games for children in the area and they are helping providing some coaching to the local schools in Broome including the Kimberley Indigenous residential college.

It seems that Football in the Kimberley will continue going from strength to strength.
