Sydney FC inaugural National Youth League Champions
Sydney FC has taken home the title of 2009 National Youth League Champions in the inaugural season.
Football history was made this afternoon as the first ever televised match of the National Youth League went to air. Football fans around the country tuned into FOX SPORTS 3 to watch Sydney FC face Adelaide United at Hindmarsh Stadium, Adelaide.
It was an intense 90 minutes of football action, with both teams putting it all on the line and vying for the title.
Top of the table Sydney FC, led the way on the goal scoring front with Ibrahim Haydar towering above the crowd in the 21st minute, and finding the back of the net for a fantastic finish. This made for an impressive debut goal performance.
But despite Adelaide United-s efforts to apply pressure, Sydney FC took advantage of an opportunity with Robbie Mileski sealing the final score, 2-0 in the second half.
Sydney FC has had a sensational season, securing 13 wins from 18 games in the regular season and capping it off with a Grand Final win.
And while Adelaide United did not secure the Grand Final win, they still had reason to celebrate with player Francesco Monterosso named Top Goal Scorer for his 13 goals this season, and the club receiving the Fair Play Award. Meanwhile Queensland Roar-s Adam Sarota was named National Youth League Player of the Year.
The National Youth League offers a pathway for talented players, giving them more opportunity to play quality football and improve their skills and match preparedness. It is on this strong foundation that the future of football will continue to develop.
