Salisbury's World Cup goal wins acclaim
Cheryl Salisbury’s dramatic last minute goal to send Australia through to the quarter finals of the FIFA Women’s World Cup was voted Australia’s favourite sporting moment for 2007.
The Australian Sport Awards, now in their 28th year, are the only awards in Australia to recognise achievements across all sports in all areas of the sporting sector. The Awards were announced via a special online video presentation in conjunction with media partner SBS Television at www.australiansportawards.com.au and www.sbs.com.au. The Matildas achieved Australia's best ever World Cup performance reaching the quarter finals where they lost narrowly 3-2 to Brazil, eventual finalists. In so doing the Matildas finished 6th in the World, the best performance from an Australian Women's Football team.
In another win for Football, Fox Sports won the Sport Media Award for coverage of the Hyundai A-League and the Socceroos in 2007. Fox Sports coverage has been of the highest technical quality and extensive covering all four Hyundai A-League matches live each week as well as every national team match.
