Coober Pedy - “Opal Capital of the World”, is situated in outback South Australia approximately 850kms north of Adelaide. The region once had a rich history and following of Football, but like any mining town, the population growth tends to be inconsistent and as a result, Football slowly ceased. However, Coober Pedy is on the mend, with the town set to boom once again.

Sunday 25th October, the communities- main sporting venue - Oxiana Oval, came alive with an Optus Small Sided Football Gala Night. Approximately 40 kids were present and took part in small sided games despite the strong windy warm conditions. Local businesses also contributed and were very supportive by donating goods. These donations allowed for a BBQ and drinks for all involved, while all children were also awarded with participation and encouragement awards. To cap off a tremendous evening, the parents also took to the field to play a modified game of Football.

As Football is once again being introduced into the region, it is hoped next year with the continued awareness and support of FFSA, a league can once again operate, providing children and adults an opportunity to be involved in the ‘World Game”.

Special thanks goes to Paul Maduro - the Youth Development Officer in Coober Pedy for organising such a wonderful evening. To the parents who assisted on the night and the entire community for showing their support, your efforts have not gone unnoticed. With plenty of drive and enthusiasm on offer, no doubt Football can grow once again to be a force in the region.
