The Australian Soccer Association is still confident the new national competition is on track despite the withdrawal of the Pickard Group (Adelaide United) as one of the applicants.
ASA Chief Executive Officer Mr. John O-Neill said he was surprised by the withdrawal considering the positive correspondence ASA had received from the Pickard Group as late as yesterday.
“The Pickard Group advised the ASA late yesterday that they wanted to be a part of the new national competition and would sign the club participation agreement if two conditions were met - one which the ASA had already accepted and the other which the ASA were committed to assisting the Pickard Group in resolving,” said Mr O-Neill.
“At midday today we received a letter stating that due to a review of their position they have decided to withdraw and wished us well.”
“The Pickard Group-s sudden change of heart obviously has perplexed us; it certainly smacks of inconsistency. Nonetheless the ASA remains fully committed to establishing the NNC and will now consider alternative options including other interested parties in Adelaide.”
