Matildas At Home & Abroad Preview: Melbourne City & Portland Thorns play continental semi-finals

Melbourne City and Portland Thorns will be looking to book their place in their respective continental finals when they play in the semi-finals on Wednesday night and Thursday, respectively.

AFC Women's Champions League - Semi-Final

Melbourne City travels to Wuhan, China, to take on the South Korean side Incheon Hyundai Steel Red Angels for a place in the Final. The game acts as a double header, with Wuhan Jiangda and Hồ Chí Minh City I W.F.C. going head-to-head to see which team will book their place in the final. 

This is the first edition of the tournament, with Melbourne City looking to make history and book their place in the final. City qualified for the semi-finals after beating Taichung Blue Whale 3-0 in Melbourne. Their opponent, Hyundai Steel Red Angels, relied on an 81st-minute winner against Bam Khatoon to advance to the final four.

After a disappointing exit from the A-League Women's 2024/25 season in the second leg of the semi-finals, Melbourne City will be striving to get back to winning ways. Holly McNamara, Bryleeh Henry, Leah Davidson, Laura Hughes and Karly Roestbakken will all be expected to feature heavily in the game.

CONCACAF W Champions Cup - Semi-Final

The inaugural CONCACAF W Champions Cup competition is down to the final four teams, with Portland Thorns, Gotham FC, Club América and Tigres UANL vying for a spot in the final. 

Mackenzie Arnold and Kaitlyn Torpey's Portland Thorns will be aiming to book their spot in the final when they take on the six-time Liga MX Femenil Champions, Tigres UANL. 

The Thorns will have their work cut out for them when they take on Tigres, with the Mexican side undefeated in the CONCACAF W Champions Cup group stage, scoring 14 goals in the process. 

Despite missing the Thorns' last two games due to injury, Arnold has travelled with the squad to Mexico and was named in the official roster, while Torpey is expected to feature.
