UEFA Women’s Champions League

The first leg of the UWCL semi-finals got underway this weekend, with Lyon and Barcelona taking advantage into the second leg.

Lyon defeated Arsenal 2-1 at the Emirates. Kadidiatou Diani opened the scoring early in an incredibly even game, with Ellie Carpenter making a dominant run up the field and playing a through ball to Diani, who finished the chance. Mariona Caldentey levelled things from the penalty spot in the second half before Melchie Dumornay regained the French team’s advantage soon after.

Caitlin Foord and Steph Catley both started for Arsenal, while Kyra Cooney-Cross was an unused substitute. Ellie Carpenter started and played the full match for Lyon at right-back, picking up the on Diani's opener.

It was much more comfortable for defending champions Barcelona, who defeated Chelsea 4-1. Chelsea were well and truly in the game when Sandy Baltimore made it 2-1 late in the second half, but late goals to Claudia Pina – completing her brace – and Irene Paredes mean that Chelsea face close to the impossible in the second leg.

Sam Kerr remains unavailable for Chelsea.

England

Women’s Super League

West Ham held Manchester United to a 0-0 draw, helping Arsenal create a two-point gap in second. United dominated the game but were unable to find a way through a resilient Hammers side. Katrina Gorry started for West Ham before being withdrawn in the second half.

Two first-half goals meant that Liverpool defeated Brighton & Hove Albion 2-1. Olivia Smith and Leanna Kiernan were the goal scorers for Liverpool as they jumped into fifth place. Teagan Micah was an unused substitute for the Reds.

Manchester City and Everton played out a 1-1 draw. Kerstin Casparij scored in the first half – and the team dedicated their goal to Mary Fowler, holding up her shirt. However, a Karen Holmgaard equaliser from Everton’s only shot on target meant that they walked away with a point. Clare Wheeler started and played the full match in midfield for the Toffees, captaining the side, while it was Fowler’s first game that she was unavailable for after rupturing her ACL.

Aston Villa toppled Tottenham Hotspur 3-2 in the final game of the weekend. Spurs thought they did enough for a point after Jessica Naz and Ella Morris reeled in the two-goal deficit, before a stoppage-time winner to Kirsty Hanson saw Villa steal the three points. Clare Hunt was an unused substitute for Spurs while Hayley Raso and Charli Grant were not named in the matchday squad.

Women’s Championship

Birmingham City defeated Durham 3-1 to keep pace with London City Lionesses above them. Simone Magill scored a brace before Emily van Egmond picked up her first goal for Birmingham. Van Egmond started and played the full match for Birmingham.

United States

The Portland Thorns were defeated in the first derby of the season, with Seattle Reign running out 1-0 victors. Maddie Dahlien’s 4th minute goal separated the two sides. Kaitlyn Torpey started at right-back for Portland while Mackenzie Arnold returned to the side after her injury to be an unused substitute.

Bay FC defeated North Carolina Courage 1-0. Kiki Pickett scored in the first half with a strike that proved to be the winner. Cortnee Vine came off the bench in the second half for the Courage.

Angel City FC fell 4-0 to a dominant Gotham FC. Esther Gonzalez scored a brace as Angel City were unable to accumulate a single shot on target. Alanna Kennedy started the match in midfield.

Sweden

Jada Whyman made her first start after more than six months out with injury, but it was on the losing side, as AIK Fotboll fell 4-1 to Malmö. The result means that AIK find themselves in the relegation play-off place after four games, something they would have hoped to avoid in this new season.

It was a weekend of returns for CommBank Matildas, with Amy Sayer coming off the bench for Kristianstads DFF in her first appearance since her ACL rupture in April 2024. It was again the losing side, however, with Kristianstads DFF falling 2-1 to last season’s champions Rosengård. However, Kristianstads might feel a little hard done by the defeat, with a clear-cut penalty in the dying minutes of the game missed by the referee. Remy Siemsen started the match up top for Kristianstads.

Denmark

FC Nordsjælland fell 3-0 to Fortuna Hjørring in a blow that may be fatal to their title hopes. Hjørring were two goals to the good in the second half before a second yellow card to Alma Aagard made any hope of getting back into the game a much more difficult task. Nordsjælland are now ten points away from Hjørring, who sit in first. Winonah Heatley started and played the full game for Nordsjælland.

Netherlands

FC Twente made a statement against Ajax, defeating them 5-1 and all but eliminating one of their rivals from the title race. Jaimy Ravensbergen scored a brace as Twente ran riot over their opponents.

The result was also crucial for goal difference, with Twente now five above PSV who are in second. If Twente win both of their remaining two games and maintain that five-goal difference ahead of PSV, they will win the league.

Daniela Galic was an unused substitute for Twente.
