LA Galaxy to Face Sydney FC at Telstra Stadium

Football Federation Australia (FFA) today announced that the US Major League Soccer (MLS) Team LA Galaxy will play a one-off match against the Hyundai A-League's Sydney FC in Australia later this year.

Football Federation Australia (FFA) today announced that the US Major League Soccer (MLS) Team LA Galaxy will play a one-off match against the Hyundai A-League's Sydney FC in Australia later this year. “It is my pleasure to announce that Football Federation Australia has negotiated for the LA Galaxy, including their new star recruit David Beckham, to play a one-off match against Sydney FC at Telstra Stadium (Sydney) on Tuesday the 27th of November,” said FFA Chief Executive Officer Ben Buckley.

“This historic event will be Beckham-s first appearance outside of North America for LA Galaxy, and his first visit to Australia.

“I am also very pleased to announce that Network Ten will broadcast this major event live nationally in a three hour special presentation.

“In addition to TEN, we would also like to acknowledge and thank Telstra Stadium and the NSW Government, who have also made important and substantial contributions to make this event possible. FFA is very grateful for their support,” added Buckley.

“On the eve of Australia's first tilt at the AFC Asian Cup, and less than two months out from the start of Hyundai A-League Season Three, it is wonderful to be able to announce an event like this between two great teams from two of the world-s premier cities.

"Once the concept for events of this nature has been proven, we will be working to arrange similar fixtures between Hyundai A-League Clubs around Australia and high profile international club opponents in future years," concluded Buckley.

David White, TEN's general manager - Sport said, "Football in Australia has risen in status - both in commercial and public appeal - over the last three years and TEN is committed to strengthening support for the game by bringing this high profile event to as many viewers as possible.

"A first for football in Australia, the showdown between the two teams will be produced in high definition."

Acting NSW Premier, John Watkins welcomed news of the agreement and said the match would attract significant international interest for Sydney.

“In the world of sports entertainment there is no bigger name than David Beckham,” Mr Watkins said.

“News and coverage of this match will showcase Sydney not just in the US, but in football playing nation-s right around the world.

“It reinforces Sydney-s reputation as a truly global city with the pulling power to attract marquee events.

“Fittingly the match will be played at Telstra Stadium, one of the great legacies of the 2000 Olympics.

“The NSW Government looks forward to supporting this event and welcoming the LA Galaxy and all of their supporters to town,” concluded Watkins.

Telstra Stadium CEO Ken Edwards was also delighted to be working in partnership with Football Federation Australia to stage this one off event.

“This is a great story for the sporting public of NSW and the event will be one of the highlights on the 2007 Telstra Stadium calendar” added Mr Edwards.

The match will coincide with the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Conference Annual Awards night which will be held in Sydney from the 27-29 November 2007.

Tickets for this historic event will go on sale to Australian sports fans later this month through Ticketek, with Sydney FC members and members of the Football Family receiving priority access.
