Glory takes its chance

An 80th-minute penalty from Mile Sterjovski has seen the Perth Glory snatch a 1-0 victory over a luckless Newcastle at EnergyAustralia Stadium.

Despite being outplayed for much of the second half, the Glory claimed their second away victory in a row when Jets' goalkeeper Ben Kennedy fouled an onrushing Sterjovski with 11 minutes to play.

Midfielder Victor Sikora had set up the chance, the Dutchman beating two Newcastle opponents before threading through a pin-point pass that allowed Sterjovski to accelerate into the box, where he was brought down by Kennedy, who was slow to come off his line.

Sterjovski rifled home the spotkick off the underside of the bar, the three points seeing the Glory temporarily climb into equal top position on the Hyundai A-League table ahead of both Sydney and Gold Coast United playing later in the weekend.

But for the Jets, it was Newcastle's third loss in a row and the second where a mistake by the unfortunate Kennedy has cost the club a deserved share of the points.

Earlier in the evening, the Glory made it a double success as the Perth National Youth League side also claimed a 1-0 victory over the Jets via the clinical finishing of Eugene Dadi.

The big Frenchman was on hand to fire home during the 19th minute as an experienced Glory youth side - that featured two 35-year-olds - went on to hold sway during the second half.
