Fowler brace sinks GCU
A second half Robbie Fowler double for North Queensland has downed state rivals Gold Coast United 2-0 at Skilled Park on Saturday night.
The win gives the Fury its second win on the trot and embarrassed United on the back of their 6-0 drubbing last week against Wellington.
When the teams emerged from the break Gold Coast looked the livelier, however the Fury managed to break the deadlock in the 63rd minute through Robbie Fowler.
The Fury's marquee man fired a left foot drive low into the bottom corner when David Williams cut back a pass after turning United defender Sebastian Van Den Brink inside-out on the left.
Gold Coast's night got worse when the Fury were granted a penalty in the 76th minute after Steve Pantelidis was judged to have handled the ball in the area.
Fowler then stepped up to convert, placing his shot neatly to the left of Higgins who dived the wrong way.
The Central Coast Mariners and Adelaide United have played out a scoreless draw in their round 13 A League encounter at Canberra Stadium.
The first half lacked the intensity expected of two teams needing to win to stay in touch with the top four, but both sides upped the ante ten minutes into the second half.
Adelaide had a penalty appeal rejected in the 82nd minute when Mathew Leckie was brought down in a Dean Heffernan tackle, but proceedings quickly turned in their favour when the Mariners had Crowell sent off for his second bookable offence.
They were not able to take advantage of the send off though, with an Alemao header and Fabian Barbiero coming close, but Danny Vukovic was up to the task in goals.
In the Westfield W-League, the Central Coast Mariners fought out a scoreless draw, while the Roar thrashed the Glory 6-0. Melbourne Victory defeated Newcastle 2-1.
In the solitary Youth League game Newcastle Jets defeated Brisbane 1-0.
