FAQ: Australia Cup 2024 Draw Principles Explained | Round of 16

Following the conclusion of the final Australia Cup 2024 Round of 32 match on Wednesday, 7 August, another draw will be held to determine the Round of 16, Quarter Final and Semi Final match-ups.

While the Round of 32 draw was conducted in normal fashion like in 2022 and 2023, a notable change has been made to the format of the subsequent rounds of the competition.

The draw will be broadcast live and free on 10 Play, Australia Cup Facebook and Football Australia YouTube.

How is the Draw for the Australia Cup 2024 Round of 16 changing from previous years?

In previous editions of the Australia Cup, a Draw has been completed before the Round of 32, and prior to each stage of the competition ie Round of 16, Quarter Finals and Semi Finals. In 2024, the Quarter Finals and Semi Finals Draw will be conducted immediately following the Round of 16 Draw. This means teams will be able to map their path and opponents leading up to the Cup Final, however, there remains no fixed path for any team so it's a completely open draw.

How will the Draw work?

For the Round of 16, balls containing the names of all participating Clubs will be placed in one pot. The balls will be drawn  and revealed one at a time, until all balls have been drawn and match ups confirmed.
In the subsequent Draw for the Quarter Finals, balls containing a match number (1-8) will be drawn, opened, and revealed one at a time, until all balls have been drawn. The drawn numbers will correspond with Round of 16 fixtures, outlining potential Quarter Final match ups (i.e winner of Match 3 v winner of Match 7).
This process is then repeated for the Semi Finals, outlining which Quarter Final winners will face off for a spot in the Cup Final on Saturday, 5 October*.

Does anything else change?

All the existing Draw principles for the Australia Cup 2024 Final Rounds will be the same under this new Draw format. The competition’s completely open draw remains, with the first drawn Club being the home team unless a Member Federation Club is facing an Isuzu UTE A-League Men club, while Wellington Phoenix FC will always be deemed the away team.

Why are the remaining Final Rounds being drawn this way?

The new format allows clubs to see their potential path from the Round of 16 to the Cup Final, while also supporting logistics and planning for the later rounds of the competition.
