Caltex Socceroo Jackson Irvine can’t stop scoring in the English Championship, grabbing the winner for Burton Albion this morning (SAT).
Irvine nodded home from close range after just 11 minutes, with Burton going on to beat Derby County 1-0 at the Pirelli Stadium.
In what is becoming a trademark of Irvine this season, the young Aussie times his run into the box to perfection to arrive at the right time to divert Lucas Akins’ cross into the net.
It was Irvine’s third goal in as many games for the Brewers as they moved up to sixth spot in the Championship.
The in-form 23-year-old now heads back to Australia in excellent touch ahead of next week’s FIFA World Cup qualifier against Iraq.
Elsewhere in England, ex-Newcastle Jets keeper Mark Birighitti played a full match and kept a clean sheet in Swansea City U23’s 2-0 win over West Ham’s youngsters.
In Germany, Mitch Langerak continued his rich vein of form as his Vfb Stuttgart side held on for a big 2-1 away win at SV Sandhausen.
Winger Ben Halloran watched from the bench as his Heidenheim side lost 2-1 at home to Wurzburger Kickers.
Ex-Western Sydney Wanderers flyer Golgol Mebrahtu played 83 minutes as his Mlada Boleslav won 2-0 against Hradec Kralove in the Czech Republic, while Thomas Deng came on in stoppage time of Jong PSV’s 2-0 win at Jong Utrecht in the Eerste Divisie in Holland.
Finally, it was a winning start to the season for Josh Mitchell’s Eastern SC in the Hong Kong Premier League.
Mitchell, whose side takes on Newcastle Jets in a friendly next week, played a full match and marshalled his defence superbly as they beat Tai Po 1-0.
