During the week starting on the 8th of July 2007, dozens of youth football teams will descend on our nations capital for the 17th edition of the McDonalds Kanga Cup.

The McDonalds Kanga Cup is Australia-s biggest and oldest international youth football tournament. The tournament has been hosted by one of Football Federation Australia-s member federations, Capital Football, since it-s inception in 1991 and 17 years later, there are expectations of 170 teams taking park in the week long tournament.

It provides an opportunity for tournament participants to meet players from all over Australia as well as international visitors. Past participants have been from Fiji, South Africa, Russia, Georgia, England, Denmark, Indonesia, People's Republic of China, New Zealand, the United States, Italy, Chinese Taipei and East Timor among others. Social and cultural exchange is encouraged between competitors throughout the tournament, with a wide range of social activities available for participants and officials making the tournament a "cultural festival of football".

On the 5th February 2007, Capital Football announced there would be an addition to the tournament this year in the form of a ‘Football Fellowship-, extended to the members of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC).

As Event Manager Steven McIntyre commented, “engaging with Asian in football has begun in earnest. This exciting news will hopefully strengthen our links to Asia and position the McDonald-s Kanga Cup as the leading international youth club tournament in the Asian region. We encourage teams from Asia to see yourself in Australia-s national capital - playing football in Canberra against Australia-s best club youth teams.”

On Tuesday 22nd May, Capital Football were proud to announce Providence Gujarat FC of India as the inaugural recipients of the McDonald-s Kanga Cup Asian Fellowship. Other candidates for the Fellowship came from teams in from China, Korea and Kyrgyzstan.
